I WISH TO GO TO SCHOOL ON A BIG YELLOW SCHOOL BUS.
Prabesh, diagnosed with leukemia at 2½
years of age, couldn’t wait to go to school when he turned
4 on March 21. Prabesh has been in the hospital since last
November, and it was there, on Valentine’s Day, that he
waited for the school bus to arrive and realize his wish.
His mom said, “He sees school buses, and ever since he was
2 and could say the word, “bus,” he has wanted to ride one.
I always told him when he gets to his fourth birthday, he
gets to ride the school bus and go to school.”
After saying hello to the bus driver, Prabesh ran aboard
and took his seat. The bus took him to Omaha Public Schools’
Dundee Elementary, where Mrs. Holland’s kindergarten class
and her secret weapon for first-day jitters (a hamster named
“Daisy”) were waiting for him.
Prabesh was a little nervous at first, but who isn’t on
their first day of school? After meeting all of his classmates
and then Daisy, Prabesh began to relax. While at school,
he helped the class with the calendar, drew a picture of
Daisy and joined everyone for story time. When it was time
to leave, Prabesh handed out Valentines to all of his classmates
and then packed up his backpack.
Prabesh raced down the hall to his school bus, but unlike
most children, the bus didn’t take him home, but back to
the hospital. That didn’t keep Prabesh from being all smiles.
He loved his first day of school, Daisy, and the bus ride
even more than he thought he would. His mom said, “You have
to live life cherishing the good days and getting through
the bad ones.”
