Wesley, caught in one of many smiles on the big screen.

“GO HUSKERS!!!”

When asked if he had any comment after being presented his wish, without missing a beat, this 16-year-old Husker fan, shouted: “GO HUSKERS!”

Wesley, an avid Husker fan, was presented his Husker Sports Wish at the 10th Annual Blue Jean Ball in Omaha last month. Wesley’s wish was presented by Frank & Kitty Shankwitz of Prescott, Arizona. Frank & Kitty are original founders of Make-A-Wish, formed in 1980.
Wesley’s wish included the following:

  • Courtside seating at the Men’s Basketball final home game of the 2007-08 season
  • Tickets to the Husker/Creighton Men’s Baseball game at Hawks Field in April
  • Tickets to a Husker Football game, which will include a special media pass
  • Husker gear to wear for each of the above sports
  • Five years’ of season passes for Men’s Husker Basketball games for two

Wesley enjoys all sports, but his first love is basketball. He’s such an enthusiast that he serves as a towel handler for his favorite high school team, the Syracuse Rockets, and he also visits the Nebraska City’s KNCY “Coaches Corner” radio show every Saturday.

Wesley attended the Men’s Basketball final game of the 2008 season, and enjoyed the courtside seating with his brother, Levi. While sitting courtside, Dr. Tom Osborne came by, as did the UNL cheerleaders. Witnesses are not sure if Wesley or Levi was overheard to say, “Cool Chicks! We forgot to get their phone numbers.”

The Huskers defeated Northern Colorado 68-49, and according to Wesley, it was “a big blowout!” Coach Sadler gave the credit for the big win to Wesley’s good luck of being there to cheer them on.

After the game, Wesley and his family were given a tour of the locker room and met the players, as well as some of the new team for the 2009 basketball season. Coach Doc Sadler introduced himself and asked Wesley to join him on the post-game radio show with Kent Pavelka, who asked Wesley if he had any questions for Doc. Wesley asked, “What do you see for the team next year?”

While Wesley was on the radio with Doc Sadler, the players were busy autographing a pair of Aleks Maric’s size 17 red shoes. Wesley happened to be wearing green shoes that day, and the team wasted no time in presenting him a pair of red ones.

Our thanks to the UNL Athletic Department for assisting with Wesley’s wish, and to Coach Doc Sadler and the Men’s Basketball Team, for the warm hospitality and friendliness shown to this avid Husker fan and his family.

Wesley’s dad said Wesley had trouble sleeping the night before the basketball game, as he was so excited. Here’s to many more sleepless nights for all of the right reasons! Enjoy your wish, Wesley!
